You want to apply Visiting Sweden for more than 90 days

You are a citizen of a non-EU country and want to visit Sweden for more than 90 days or extend an ongoing visit. To do so, you must apply for a visitor’s residence permit.

  • Important to know
  • How it works
  • Apply

If you want to visit Sweden for a total of 90 days or more, you must apply for a visitor’s residence permit. This applies no matter whether you

  • are currently outside Sweden
  • are already in Sweden with a Schengen visa or as a visa-free person and want to extend your stay to last 90 days or longer
  • want to extend a visitor’s residence permit.

If you will be visiting Sweden for less than 90 days, you should not apply for a residence permit. However, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa.

You want to apply – Visiting Sweden for up to 90 days (entry visa)

You should not apply for a visitor’s residence permit if you have an ongoing application

If you already have an ongoing application for a residence permit, for example to work or live with someone in Sweden, the Swedish Migration Agency advises against also applying for a visitor’s residence permit. If you do so, your ongoing application might be rejected.

These requirements must be met in order for you to be granted a residence permit:

You must have a valid passport

The passport must be valid for at least three months after the end date of your visit.

Your stay in Sweden must only be for the purpose of visiting the country

You must intend to leave Sweden after your stay

You must be able to support yourself during the time you will be in Sweden

Read more about what applies to each category under the headings below.

You must have medical travel insurance for your entire planned stay
You must have an individual medical travel insurance that is valid in Sweden. The Swedish Migration Agency recommends that the insurance cover costs of at least EUR 30,000, be valid in all Schengen countries, and cover emergency medical assistance, urgent hospital treatment, or transport to your country of origin for medical reasons.

If any of these situations apply to you, you do not need to have medical travel insurance:

  • You have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or are a resident of the United Kingdom and have a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). If you have one of these insurance cards, attach a copy of it to your application.
  • You are a resident of Australia and have a permanent residence permit there or are a citizen of that country.
  • You are a citizen and resident of Algeria.
  • You are listed in the Swedish Population Register.

Translate documents
All submitted documents should be in Swedish or English. If you have translated your documents, the translation should be certified.

Select which embassy to visit
If you apply from outside Sweden, you must also book an appointment to visit an embassy or consulate-general when you make your application. Not all Swedish embassies and consulates-general handle migration cases, so it is important to check which one you should contact:

The applicable conditions and what you need to prepare for your application depends on the reason for your visit
