You want to apply Frontier workers

You are a British citizen who lives in another country, but works in Sweden, and want to apply for proof that you are a frontier worker.

As a British citizen, you are considered a frontier worker if you work or run your own business in Sweden but reside in another country. In that case, according to the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement, you can apply for a certificate verifying that you are a frontier worker in Sweden and have the right to be here.

To get a certificate proving that you are a frontier worker, you must meet the following requirements:

You must be resident in another country

You must work or run your own business in Sweden

You resided in another country and worked in Sweden before 31 December 2020

Translate documents
All submitted documents should be in Swedish or English. If you have translated your documents, the translation should be certified. You must also submit a copy of the document in its original language.

You must attach copies of these documents to your application

Make sure that the information on your submitted documents is clearly visible.

Proof that you live in another country
For example, a housing contract or equivalent population registration.

Proof that you work or are self-employed in Sweden

If you are an employee, you must attach

  • proof of employment, with information about your employer’s name, contact details, and company registration number, your wages/salary, the duration and scope of your employment (the latter calculated in hours per week), and when the employment commenced.
  • your most recent pay slip (from the previous month). The payslip must include the name of the employee, the name of the employer, net wages/salary, and any pay supplements or deductions for, e.g., a leave of absence or sick days.

If you are self-employed, you must attach

  • documents showing that you are self-employed, such as your F-tax certificate and accounting certificate, your latest VAT report to the Swedish Tax Agency, or tax account statements. You can also provide other proof that you run the business, such as invoices issued to customers, receipts, or a rental contract.

If you are about to start up your business in Sweden but do not yet have any business, you can submit copies of

  • documents showing what planning is in place for the company and what preparations you have made
  • service contracts, customer contact details, or rental contract
  • transfer agreement and the latest annual report.

Proof that you lived in another country and were working in Sweden as of 31 December 2020

Documents showing how often you travel to and from Sweden
For example, copies of tickets or other documents showing how often you have travelled between the country where you live and Sweden.

It costs nothing to apply for a certificate proving that you are a frontier worker.

You will receive a card as proof that you are a frontier worker. The card is valid for five years and can be renewed.

If the period of validity of your card is about to expire and you want to work in Sweden, you must renew the card. To do so, you must make an appointment with the Swedish Migration Agency in order to be photographed and fingerprinted for a new card.
