You have received a decision Your application has been approved – work

Your application for a permit to work, run your own business, or look for a job in Sweden has been approved. The information on this page applies to both those who have been granted a permit for the first time and those who have been granted an extended permit.

If you have been granted a residence permit for more than three months, you will receive a residence permit card. This card is proof that you have permission to be in Sweden. You need to be photographed and fingerprinted for the card, unless you already did this when you applied or when you presented your passport. If you have family members who have applied with you, they must also be photographed and fingerprinted.

You need to be photographed and fingerprinted for your residence permit card, if you have not already done so. When you should do so depends on whether you need an entry visa to travel to Sweden.

If you need an entry visa to travel to Sweden, you must get fingerprinted and photographed at an embassy or consulate-general and then wait for your residence permit card to be ready before you can travel to Sweden. When you visit the embassy, you must bring your passport with you.

When you travel to Sweden, you must present your residence permit card together with a valid passport.

If you do not need an entry visa to travel to Sweden, you can get fingerprinted and photographed at one of the Swedish Migration Agency’s service centres after you have arrived in Sweden.

You need to be photographed and fingerprinted for your residence permit card. You must do this even if you have had a Swedish residence permit before, because this information is not saved. You can do this at one of the Swedish Migration Agency’s service centres.

It can take up to four weeks after you have submitted documentation for your residence permit card before it is ready. If you are outside Sweden, you can pick it up at the embassy or consulate-general. If you are in Sweden, it will be sent to your registered address.

If you are granted a residence permit for more than one year, you should register in Sweden’s population register and get a Swedish personal identity number. If you need to seek care in Sweden, you may have to pay for it yourself if you are not registered in the population register and don’t have a Swedish personal identity number.

About Sweden – for new arrivals

Your residence permit is valid for working for the employer and within the profession you specified when you applied.

If you get a new job with another employer or if your work responsibilities change, you must apply for a new permit.

If you later want to apply for an extended work permit, you will need to show that the conditions for the work permit have been met during the entire time you have had a work permit in Sweden. You must therefore save all documents that you may need to show the Swedish Migration Agency, such as payslips, certificates of employment, certificates regarding any absences from work, and certificates showing that you have been covered by insurance throughout the permit period.

If you have been granted a work permit or a residence permit as a self-employed person, in most cases your family members can apply for a residence permit to live with you in Sweden.

You want to apply – Residence permits for family who apply afterwards

If you have been granted a permit to work in one of the following occupations, your family cannot come to Sweden:

  • au pair
  • berry picker
  • seasonal worker
  • holiday work for young people
  • trainee/intern
  • volunteer
  • look for work or explore the possibilities of starting your own business.

If you have been granted an EU Blue Card, an ICT permit or an ICT permit for long-term mobility, you must notify the Swedish Migration Agency if anything changes that affect the conditions for the permit. For example, it may be that your terms and conditions of employment have worsened or that your salary/wages is no longer high enough.

If you fail to notify the Swedish Migration Agency of these changes, your permit may be revoked. You also risk being rejected if you later want to apply for an extension. In the worst case, you can be punished with a fine or imprisonment for a maximum of six months.

How to notify us of changes

Notify the Swedish Migration Agency of changes by sending us a letter explaining what has changed. You must clearly state your name and your case number.

During the period in which your permit is valid, you can travel in and out of the country. However, if you leave Sweden, you must have both a valid passport and your residence permit card to be able to return here.

Yes, in certain situations, the Swedish Migration Agency can revoke a permit. For example, this applies in these cases:

  • if you provided incorrect information in your application or did not tell us about something of significance to your residence permit
  • if the conditions for the permit are no longer met, such as if you are no longer working or if the terms of your employment are no longer met
  • if you have not started work within four months of the first day of validity of the residence permit.

If your application for a permanent residence permit has been approved, you can read more on the page You have received a decision – permanent residence permit.

If your application for a permanent residence permit has been rejected but you have been granted a temporary permit, you can apply for a permanent residence permit the next time you want to apply for an extension.

The Swedish Migration Agency can carry out checks during an ongoing work permit, so-called “follow-up checks”. At a follow-up check, the Swedish Migration Agency verifies that you have received the salary/wages and insurance coverage that were the basis for granting your permit. In the event of a follow-up check, your employer must, at the request of the Swedish Migration Agency, provide information about i.e. salary/wages payments and insurance coverage.

If, during a follow-up check, the Swedish Migration Agency discovers that the terms and conditions of employment are not met, the Swedish Migration Agency may revoke your permit.

You may choose to change employers while the Swedish Migration Agency investigates whether your work permit should be revoked. You must then apply for a new work permit for a new employer within four months.
