You have a permit in Sweden – Work If you change employer or profession or stop working

You have a work permit in Sweden and are going to change your employer or profession or stop working.

Your permit applies to the employer and profession stated in the decision that granted it. If something changes, you may need to apply for a new permit.

If you are going to change employer or profession

If you get a new job with another employer, or if you change profession or have completely new work responsibilities, you need to apply for a new work permit. The same applies if your employer changes its company registration number or gets new owners, as this counts as a change of employer.

Once you have submitted your new application, you can start working for your new employer or in your new profession before you have received a decision from the Swedish Migration Agency, provided that you have applied before your previous work permit has expired.

Keep in mind that your new employer must have advertised the position in Sweden and within the EU/EEA and Switzerland before you start your employment.

If you have an EU Blue Card, you must notify the Swedish Migration Agency if your employment ceases, if you change jobs, or if something that affects the conditions for the permit changes. For example, your salary no longer reaches the salary threshold.

The requirements for an EU Blue Card must also be met for your new employment.

Failure to notify changes in your employment may lead to your application for a permit or extension of a permit being rejected, or the permit being withdrawn.

Inform the Swedish Migration Agency about any changes by sending a letter explaining what has changed. You must clearly state your name and the reference number of your case.

Send the letter to:

If you are going to stop working

If you terminate your employment early, for example because you are dismissed or because you resign, you no longer meet the requirements for the work permit you have been granted. You still have the option of staying in Sweden to look for a new job for three months after your last day of employment, provided that your work permit is still valid during that period.

Keep this in mind if you are looking for a new job

When you apply for a job, you should provide documents that show that you have the right to be in Sweden and work here. Also bring your residence permit card. An employer will want to know how long you have a right to work in Sweden and if your permit has any restrictions. Anyone who employs you will want to have a copy of these documents and will notify the Swedish Tax Agency that they have hired you.

If you get a new job after you have terminated your previous employment

If you get a new job within three months of terminating your previous employment and the new job is in the same field, you can apply to extend your work permit. You must apply for an extended work permit before you start the new job, and you must have an employment contract to be able to apply.

You want to extend – Work

If you get a new job and you have had a work permit for less than 24 months, you must instead apply for a new work permit.

If your new job means that you are changing professions, you must submit a new application regardless of how long you have had a work permit.

You want to apply – Work

If you do not find a new job within three months

If you do not find a new job within three months or if your work permit expires before then, and you do not have the right to stay in Sweden on any other grounds, you must leave the country.
