You have received a decision Your application has been approved – long-term resident status in Sweden

Your application for long-term resident status in Sweden has been approved.

The decision will be sent to your address in Sweden.

Once your application has been approved, you will receive an EC/EU residence permit card. The card is proof that you have long-term resident status in Sweden and contains, among other things, your fingerprints and a photo of you.

You need to be photographed and fingerprinted

To get your EC/EU residence permit card, you need to be photographed and fingerprinted. You must do this even if you have had a Swedish residence permit before, because this information is not saved. You can do this at one of the Swedish Migration Agency’s Service Centres.

If you have also received a decision granting you a permanent residence permit

If you do not already have a permanent residence permit when you are granted long-term resident status in Sweden, you will also be granted a permanent residence permit. You will then receive both an EC/EU residence permit card and a residence permit card.

Read about what applies when you have been granted a permanent residence permit on the page You have received a decision – Permanent residence permit.

The EC/EU residence permit card, and your residence permit card (if applicable) will be sent to your home address within about a week after it is ready.

Your long-term resident status is valid for an unlimited period of time, but may be revoked if, for example, you remain outside the EU for more than one year, if you remain outside of Sweden for more than six consecutive years, or if you are granted long-term resident status in another EU country.

When the period of validity of your current EC/EU residence permit card expires, you can renew your card.

Your family members do not automatically get long-term resident status when you get it. They must meet the requirements themselves. This applies to every family member. If you have children who have resided in Sweden for less than five years with a residence permit or on other legal grounds, they cannot be granted long-term resident status in Sweden.

If your family members want to apply for long-term resident status in Sweden, they must each submit their own application form.

Family members who do not meet the requirements

Once you have been granted long-term resident status in Sweden and a permanent residence permit, the Swedish Migration Agency will examine whether your family members can be granted a residence permit to live with you under the Swedish rules.

If you have family members who do not meet the requirements and who want to live with you in Sweden, each of them must apply for a residence permit on the grounds that they are your close relative, and they must do this before their current permit expires. This is true regardless of which type of permit they have had in the past.

If you are granted long-term resident status, then in order for your family members to be granted residence permits on the grounds that they are your close relatives, you must fulfil a maintenance requirement. This means that you must be able to show that you can support yourself and your family and have a home that is big enough for all of you to live in.

Your family can read more and apply on the page You want to apply – Live with someone.
