A child born in Sweden receives the same citizenship(s) as their parents. In some cases, you must apply for a residence permit for your child in order for them to be able to live in Sweden. This depends on your citizenship and type of permit you or the other parent has. You can apply for a residence permit for your child in the e-service for family members of an employee or self-employed person.

  • a deceased parent of the child was a Swedish citizen at the time of their death.

If the child’s parents are citizens of a non-EU/EEA country, you have to apply for a residence permit for your child.
