If you applied in the e-service, you must visit an embassy or consulate-general to be interviewed and present your passport. You were asked to book an appointment for this visit when you applied. If there are several of you who applied together, everyone must come along for the visit.

If you applied during a visit to an embassy, you presented your passport and were interviewed when you submitted the application.

If you need an entry visa to travel to Sweden and are granted a residence permit, you need a residence permit card before you travel. You must therefore be fingerprinted and photographed during your visit.

When you receive the decision, you can find out the reasons on which we based it. If your application is rejected, information on what to do if you want to appeal is provided.

If you applied for a residence permit from inside Sweden, the decision will be sent to the Swedish address you provided in your application. If you have given somebody a power of attorney to represent you, the decision will be sent to that person.

If you leave Sweden after your visa, visa-free period or residence permit has expired, we recommend that you take your receipt for the application with you when you leave. The border police are responsible for border controls in and out of to Sweden. Neither the Swedish Migration Agency nor the Border police can give an advance decision on whether you will be allowed to travel back to Sweden. This decision is made directly at the border control.

If you leave Sweden after your Schengen visa, visa-free period, or residence permit has expired, we recommend that you take the acknowledgement of receipt of your application with you. This is to show the border police that you have applied for a residence permit and have not been staying illegally in Sweden. It is the border police that are responsible for the border control of people entering and exiting Sweden.

If you are visa-free or have a valid Schengen visa, you can enter Sweden before you have received a decision. In that case, it is important that you notify the Swedish Migration Agency that you are in Sweden.
