The residence card gives you the right to live and work in Sweden for as long as your family member has right of residence through work, studies, self-employment, or by supporting themselves with their own financial means.

If you are an EU/EEA citizen without right of residence or a family member of a Nordic citizen, and your application for a residence permit to live with your family member in Sweden has been approved, you should instead read the page:

If you need an entry visa to travel to Sweden, you must submit an entry visa application at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country where you live. If you are a family member of an EU/EEA citizen, you do not have to pay a fee when applying for an entry visa to travel to Sweden.

If you do not need an entry visa to travel to Sweden

If you do not need an entry visa to travel to Sweden, you can come here before you have received a residence card. If your family member has right of residence in Sweden, you can start working or studying as soon as you arrive.

A residence card has a photo of you and a chip on which your fingerprints are stored. You must therefore visit the Swedish Migration Agency to be photographed and fingerprinted, if you did not do so when you applied.

The residence card will be sent to your address in Sweden. If your family member has right of residence in Sweden, you have the right to start working or studying as soon as you arrive. You do not need to wait until you receive your residence card.

If you plan to live in Sweden for at least one year, you must report your move to Sweden and get listed in the Swedish Population Register. It is the Swedish Tax Agency that decides whether you meet the conditions for being listed in the Swedish Population Register. Being listed in the Swedish Population Register means that you are registered as a resident of Sweden. Once you are listed in the Swedish Population Register, you will receive a personal identity number.

The period of validity of the card may vary, but is no longer than five years.

If the period of validity of your residence card will soon expire and you want to continue living in Sweden, you must submit a new residence card application before the card expires.

If you have lived in Sweden for five years and your family member has had right of residence throughout that period, you have permanent right of residence. If you want proof of your permanent right of residence, you can apply for a permanent residence card.

You want to apply – Permanent residence card

The Swedish Migration Agency may deregister your residence card if you no longer meet the conditions for right of residence, for example if your relationship has ended, you have moved from Sweden, or if information emerges that indicates that your residence card was registered based on incorrect information.

Your permanent residence card will be sent to your home in the post.

If the period of validity of your permanent residence card will soon expire, you should not apply for a new permanent residence card. Instead, you must make an appointment with the Swedish Migration Agency, to be photographed and fingerprinted for a new card.
