Options for Nordic citizens

If you are a Nordic citizen, you have several different opportunities to become a Swedish citizen. If you have lived in Sweden for at least five years, you can file a notification. For information about notification for Nordic citizens, continue reading this page.

If you have not lived in Sweden for five years, you can submit a citizenship application instead. To become a Swedish citizen through application, you must have lived in Sweden for at least two years.

Citizenship for adults

If you are between the ages of 18 and 21, you can choose to file a notification for people aged 18 to 21. In terms of proving your identity and that you have lived an orderly life in Sweden, such a notification has different requirements than those that apply if you file a notification as a Nordic citizen.

Citizenship for people aged 18 to 21

For a Nordic citizen to become a Swedish citizen through notification, they must meet certain requirements. Before submitting your notification, you must meet the following requirements:

You must be a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Iceland or Norway

You must have reached the age of 18

You must have lived in Sweden for five years (period of habitual residence)
As a rule, your period of habitual residence is calculated from the date on which you became listed in the Swedish Population Register.

You must have not been sentenced to prison or other incarceration in the past five years

If you have children under the age of 18 who live in Sweden, they will become Swedish citizens at the same time as you, if any of the following is true of you:

  • You have sole custody of the child.
  • You share joint custody with the child’s other parent, who is a Swedish citizen.
  • The other parent becomes a Swedish citizen at the same time as you.

If none of these situations apply to you and you want your child to also become a Swedish citizen, you must submit your own notification for the child.
