You have received a decision Alien’s passports and travel documents

You have received a decision about your application for an alien’s passport, emergency alien’s passport, or travel document.

The decision will be sent to your address in Sweden.

If the Swedish Migration Agency has decided to grant you an alien’s passport or travel document, we will send you a letter when your passport is available for collection. This can take up to 14 days. An emergency alien’s passport can be issued on the same day that we make a decision, and the decision states when you can pick it up.

If the Swedish Migration Agency refuses your application for a travel document, you can appeal. Information on how to appeal is provided in the decision.

Appeal a decision

If you are granted an alien’s passport, emergency alien’s passport, or travel document, you must book an appointment to collect the passport before you visit the Swedish Migration Agency. Be sure to make an appointment for each person who will be collecting their passport. If you will be picking up passports for your children, you must make an appointment for each passport you will be collecting.

You must pick up your passport in person. For children under the age of 18, a parent/legal guardian or guardian can pick up the passport without being accompanied by the child. Children over the age of 15 can pick up their passport themselves, as long as the Swedish Migration Agency has noted that their parent/legal guardian has given their consent.

You must bring

  • a valid ID
  • a credit card or debit card to pay the fee, if you will be picking up a travel document
  • your previously issued alien’s passport or travel document, if you have not already returned it.

When you pick up your travel document, you must pay a fee of SEK 350. You must pay the fee by card. The Swedish Migration Agency cannot give you your travel document until the fee has been paid.

Book an appointment for a visit

An alien’s passport is valid for a maximum of three years.

A travel document is valid for a maximum of two years.

In most cases, an emergency alien’s passport is valid for a maximum of seven months. The passport may also be limited to a one-way trip to or from Sweden, or to a single return trip. After your trip, you must return the emergency alien’s passport to the Swedish Migration Agency or to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general.

Alien’s passports, emergency alien’s passports, and travel documents meet the EU’s passport requirements and can be used to travel to most countries. Some countries may require you to have an entry visa. Before you travel, contact the embassy of the country in question for more information.

If you have been granted a residence permit based on grounds for protection or are a refugee under the 1951 Geneva Convention, your passport will state that you cannot travel to your country of origin or the country from which you fled.

If you have been unable to prove your identity, your alien’s passport or travel document will state that your identity has not been proven. This may make it more difficult to travel to certain countries.

If you lose your passport or if it is stolen, you should report this to the police. If you need a new alien’s passport or travel document, you must submit a new application. Attach a copy of the police report when you apply.
