You have a permit in Sweden – Study You are going to have a baby

You have a residence permit for studies in Sweden and you or your partner are pregnant or have had a baby. Here you will find information about what applies to you and what you need to do.

If you have children in Sweden, you must apply for a residence permit for your child. Your child cannot be granted a permit until they have a passport, but you can submit an application and supplement it with a copy of their passport at a later date. You must also register your child’s nationality with the Swedish Tax Agency.

It depends on the citizenship or permit(s) of their parents. Select the option that best describes your family’s situation.

A child always receives Swedish citizenship, and does not have to apply for a residence permit, if

  • one of their parents is a Swedish citizen at the time of the child’s birth, regardless of whether the child is born in Sweden or abroad
  • a deceased parent of the child was a Swedish citizen at the time of their death.

If the child’s parents are citizens of a non-EU/EEA country, you have to apply for a residence permit for your child.

If one of you has a residence permit in Sweden and the other has applied for asylum, you can apply for a residence permit for your child. If the child is in need of protection, you can apply for asylum for your child.

If one of the child’s parents is an EU/EEA citizen and has a right of residence in Sweden, and your child is also an EU/EEA citizen, then they automatically have a right of residence. In that case, you do not need to contact the Swedish Migration Agency. For information about your child’s population registration, contact the Swedish Tax Agency.

If the parents are EU/EEA citizens and have a residence permit in Sweden, you must apply for a residence permit for your child.

If at least one parent is a British citizen and has residence status in Sweden, your child can also receive this status.
