Amended rules for asylum seekers living in their own accommodation (EBO)
From 1 March, virtually all new asylum seekers will be required to live in one of the Swedish Migration Agency’s asylum accommodation centres in order to receive financial support from the Swedish Migration Agency in the form of daily allowances and special grants.
If you applied for asylum before 1 March 2025 and arranged your accommodation on your own, you will be assigned a place in an asylum accommodation centre. To be entitled to financial support from the Swedish Migration Agency, you need to move to and live in your your assigned location no later than 31 August. Exceptions can be made if you live with a close family member or if you have exceptional grounds. However, exceptions will be applied restrictively.
Those affected by the new rules will receive information from the Swedish Migration Agency in good time. If you have questions, you are welcome to contact your Unit for Reception.
The new rules also mean that if you are an asylum seeker and live in your own accommodation, you must provide your residential address and report your new address if you move. If you do not, the Swedish Migration Agency may consider your asylum application to have been withdrawn. This means that the Swedish Migration Agency can write off your case from further processing. If you are staying in Sweden, this may mean that you also receive a rejection or expulsion decision.
The legislative change only applies to asylum seekers. People from Ukraine with protection under the Temporary Protection Directive are not affected.
