EU/EEA citizens
As an EU/EEA citizen, once you have lived in Sweden for at least five years, you gain permanent right of residence. You can then apply for a certificate of permanent right of residence.

Family members of EU/EEA citizens
If you are a family member of an EU/EEA citizen with right of residence in Sweden, you also have right of residence.
Family who are themselves EU/EEA citizens
If you are a family member and are yourself an EU/EEA citizen, you can apply for a certificate of permanent right of residence once you have lived in Sweden for five years.

Family who are citizens of a non-EU/EEA country
If you are a family member with citizenship in a non-EU/EEA country and have a residence card that will expire soon, you can submit an application for a permanent residence card if you want to stay in Sweden. The Swedish Migration Agency will then examine whether you have had right of residence for at least five years through your close relative in Sweden, or if you have retained your right of residence on your own merits, if the relationship has ended.

If you have a residence card that is about to expire, but do not yet meet the requirements for a permanent residence card, you must submit a new residence card application if you want to stay in Sweden.

If you already live in Sweden with a residence permit
If you do not have right of residence but have a residence permit to live with a family member in Sweden, you must extend your residence permit if you want to continue living here. This applies to both to EU/EEA citizens and family of EU/EEA citizens.
