You have a permit in Sweden – Permanent residence permit You plan to travel abroad

You have a permanent residence permit in Sweden and want to travel abroad for any length of time.

If you have a permanent residence permit, you can leave Sweden for up to a year and still keep your residence permit.

If you are away for more than a year, the Swedish Migration Agency can revoke your residence permit.

Register to keep your permanent residence permit

If you know that you will be away from Sweden for more than a year, but for a maximum of two years, you can submit a notification of desire to keep your permanent residence permit. If you do not return and settle in Sweden after two years have passed, we can revoke your residence permit.

To notify a desire to keep your permanent residence permit, fill in the form:

Your notification must be received by the Swedish Migration Agency no later than one week before you leave Sweden. If your trip is cancelled, you must notify the Swedish Migration Agency no later than the day you originally planned to travel.

If you are planning to live outside Sweden for a year or more, you must also report this to the Swedish Tax Agency.

If your permanent residence permit has been revoked

If your permanent residence permit has been revoked, you must apply for a new one if you want to move back to Sweden.

If you have previously lived in Sweden with a permanent residence permit, you can be granted a residence permit because you have ties to Sweden. In this case, the Swedish Migration Agency will look at your connection to Sweden, how long you have lived in Sweden, and how long you have lived in another country.

You apply at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country where you currently live, and your permit must be granted before you travel to Sweden.
