New rules on population registration from 1 November

From 1 November, if you have temporary protection under the Temporary Protection Directive, you can be listed in the Swedish Population Register after just one year in Sweden. Changes in the support you can receive from Swedish society once you have been listed go into effect on the same date.

The Swedish Parliament has decided on new rules for the population registration of people with temporary protection under the Temporary Protection Directive. The new rules will take effect on 1 November and mean that if you have temporary protection under the Temporary Protection Directive, you must register with the Swedish Tax Agency for population registration no more than four weeks after the date on which you have had a residence permit for one year.

The new rules also mean that a child born in Sweden can become listed in the Swedish Population Register at the same time as their parents, even though the child has not had a residence permit for a whole year.

While people will be able to become listed in the Swedish Population Register sooner than they can today, the rules of several national authorities are changing. This change means that if you are listed in the Swedish Population Register according to the new rules, you will have a limited right to financial support and compensation from Swedish society.

If you want to become listed in the Swedish Population Register before 1 November, i.e. before the new rules take effect, you must have lived in Sweden with temporary protection for two years when you report your move to Sweden to the Swedish Tax Agency.
