Application process for berry pickers starts now
Due to possible upcoming legislative changes and continued stricter reviews of work permits for berry pickers, the Swedish Migration Agency is starting the application process earlier than usual.
Last week, the Swedish Migration Agency invited companies operating in the industry to a digital information meeting to provide information about possible upcoming legislative changes that may affect work permits for berry pickers. This in regards to proposals in the government's ongoing investigation into a labour immigration based on labour market needs assessment External link, opens in new window., where it is proposed that certain professions, including berry pickers, should be excluded from work permits.
‘Although this has not yet been decided, we want to give the companies concerned an opportunity to prepare by providing information on work permits for seasonal work, which is a different type of permit,’ says Hanna Geurtsen, head of Section at the Swedish Migration Agency.
Important to apply on time
The Migration Agency also informed about the importance of applying on time, as the expected processing time is four months - provided that applications are complete and submitted on time.
Since 2023, the Swedish Migration Agency has strengthened its work on scrutinising Thai recruitment agencies and their commitment as employers. The ability of the employer and the Swedish client to organise the work in such a way that the terms of the employment contracts can be followed is a central part of the examination for the Migration Agency. However, it is not possible to say in advance what investigative measures may need to be taken, as this depends on the documentation provided by employers and clients and their history.
