Pop-up passport controls in Hong Kong and Taiwan

In the beginning of July, visa-free student and employees applying for a residence permit, can show their passports in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Students and employees applying for a residence permit need to show their passport in person before they can receive a decision, even if they do not need an entry visa to travel to Sweden. In the beginning of July, they can do so in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Personnel from the Swedish embassy in Bangkok are conducting the pop-up passport controls to make the application process more accessible for entry visa-free students and workers.

The temporary checkpoints are open to applicants who

  • live in Hong Kong, or Taiwan
  • have applied for a residence permit to study or work in Sweden
  • do not need an entry visa to travel to Sweden.

No appointment needed

Applicants who want to have your passport verified at one of the temporary checkpoints do not need to book an appointment. They also do not need to wait for the Swedish Migration Agency to notify them that it is time to show their passport. If they meet the requirements in the list above, they are welcome to visit us at any of the locations listend further down on this page.

No interviews at the temporary checkpoints

Applicants who need a residence permit card or entry visa to enter Sweden should not visit the temporary checkpoints. they must visit a Swedish embassy or consulate-general as usual to be photographed and leave their fingerprints. The same applies for those who need to be interviewed, for example if they have applied for a residence permit to be reunited with a close relative in Sweden. Contact the embassy in question for information on how to book an appointment.

Applicants living in Taiwan can have their passports checked digitally

Since the end of May, visa-free students and employees can have their passports checked digitally. Taiwan is one of the 22 countries and territories included in the pilot. Applicants who have already had their passport checked digitally with the Freja app, and shared their passport details with the Swedish Migration Agency, do not need to show their passport in person.
