Changes for residents of Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania or Moldova that wish to apply for residence and work permits or visas

Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania are now part of the Schengen area. Legal residents of these countries shall, from 24 February 2025 turn to one of the five Schengen hubs for migration related matters.

Instead of contacting the embassies in Bucharest or Zagreb you should book an appointment for applications for Schengen visa or residence and work permit at one of the Schengen hubs. The Schengen hubs are the following Swedish embassies:

  • Athens
  • Berlin
  • Madrid
  • Paris
  • Rome

The same applies for citizens of Moldova that until now have referred to the embassy in Bucharest.

After 24 February you can no longer turn to the embassies in Bucharest or Zagreb for migration related matters. If you already have an ongoing application with one of these embassies, for instance if you are waiting for a residence permit card, you will still be able to finish that application with that embassy.
