Your own accommodation

This information is for asylum seekers who are arranging their own accommodation while they wait for a decision about an application for protection in Sweden.

If you do not wish to live in the accommodation provided by the Swedish Migration Agency, you can find housing on your own. Many people choose to stay with friends or relatives while they wait for a response to their asylum application. If you choose to arrange accommodation on your own, you will need to pay the accommodation costs yourself.

Whether you choose to live in accommodation provided by the Swedish Migration Agency or to arrange accommodation on your own, you must be available so that the Swedish Migration Agency can get in touch with you. Remember to notify your Unit for Reception of your new address if you move during the waiting period.

Certain resi­den­tial areas may affect your right to compen­sa­tion

Some residential areas have social and economic challenges. If you move to such a residential area, you may lose the right to a daily allowance and special grant. You may also lose the right to a daily allowance and special grant if you provide an address other than the one where you actually live, such as a P.O. box address.

Here you can find out if the address to which you want to move is located in an area that may affect your right to compensation from the Swedish Migration Agency.

Please note that to get an accurate answer, you must fill in a correct address. P.O. boxes will not work.

You always have the right to a place in accom­mo­da­tion provided by the Swedish Migra­tion Agency

If for any reason you cannot continue to live in the accommodation that you have arranged yourself, you can move to one of the accommodations provided by the Swedish Migration Agency where there is space for you. For more information, please contact the Unit for Reception where you are registered.

If you are allowed to stay

If you live in your own accommodation, you must arrange for your own place to live when you are granted a residence permit. In most cases, you are entitled to assistance from the Swedish Migration Agency for one month after the date on which your residence permit is granted.

If you are not allowed to stay in Sweden

If you live in your own accommodation and have received a refusal of entry or expulsion decision, you will be offered a place at one of the Swedish Migration Agency’s return centres no later than the date on which the decision comes into force.
